SugarTrends in Montréal – Ethische und ökologische Kleidung von ETHIK

Getreu dem SugarTrends-Motto “Einkaufen und Stöbern in ausgewählten Geschäften aus aller Welt” stellen wir euch heute Lis und ihre Boutique ETHIK aus Montréal vor.

Diese bietet jedoch nicht nur, wie man vielleicht vom Namen her denken könnte, eine tolle Auswahl an ökologisch und ethisch hergestellten Kleidungsstücken an. Hinter ETHIK steckt nämlich noch viel mehr: Ein Laden, ein Inkubator, ein Co-Working-Space, ein Platz für Workshops – und vor allem eine Philosophie! Das Hauptmerkmal bei ETHIK liegt nämlich auf der ganz besonderen Art und Weise wie ökologisches, nachhaltiges und ethisches Handeln auf diverse kreative Bereiche angewandt werden kann.

Jedes Stück aus der ETHIK-Boutique hat eine eigene Geschichte und hilft nicht nur den Designern und Künstlern sich selbst zu verwirklichen und auszudrücken, sondern realisiert insbesondere für viele weibliche Künstlerinnen den Weg eines geregelten Einkommens.

1. Liebe Lis, erkläre uns doch bitte das Konzept von ETHIK.

Bei uns in der Boutique gibt es eine Auswahl von Kollektionen von mehr als 40 Designern, die sich sowohl ethisch als auch sozial engagieren. Jeder einzelne kreiert einzigartige, modische Kleidungsstücke. Zusätzlich ist ETHIK aber auch ein Öko-Design-Netzwerk, in welchem Mitglieder von unseren Co-Working-Plätzen profitieren können. Alles was man im kreativen Prozess benötigt wird von uns zur Verfügung gestellt. Des Weiteren stellt Ethik auch eine Vielzahl an Serviceleistungen für Designer bereit, die sowohl im kreativen Schaffensprozess unterstützen, als auch bei der Kundengewinnen hilft.

2. Woher kam deine Idee eine ethische Modeboutique zu eröffnen und was hast du vorher gemacht?

Ich habe FEM International gegründet, eine Organisation, die weibliche Gründerinnen in Kanada und Entwicklungsländern unterstützt. Wir bieten eine Vielzahl an Programmen an, die es Frauen ermöglichen erfolgreiche Gründerinnen zu sein. Nachdem viele Frauen dieses Programm absolviert hatten, hatten sie jedoch kaum eine Möglichkeit ihre Produkte zu vertreiben, die meist aus der Textilindustrie stammten. So ist dann ETHIK entstanden, sozusagen ein Inkubator für neu entstehende ethische Designs.

 

3. Gibt es Produkte in deinem Store, die nur du anbietest? Woher kommen diese?

Wir arbeiten mit einer Gruppe weiblicher Kunstgewerbler aus der kolumbianischen Guajira-Region zusammen, die Mochila-Taschen produzieren. Ihr Handwerk ist bereits über 100 Jahre alt und es dauert bis zu 21 Tage eine Tasche herzustellen. Das ist wirklich der Inbegriff von “slow fashion”! Wir haben auch unsere eigene Linie “So ETHIK” im Angebot, die sich unter anderem aus T-Shirts Kleidern und Röcken aus recycelten Herrenhemden zusammensetzt.

4. Was ist dein Lieblingsstück aus dem Laden? 

Die Mochila-Taschen gehören eindeutig zu den beliebtesten Stücken! Sie sind wunderschön und auch sehr erlesen, da sie sonst kaum in Kanada zu finden sind. Wir sind die einzige Boutique, die die Taschen im Angebot hat, worauf wir sehr stolz sind.

5. Warum sollten euch Kunden mal in eurem Laden in der 6050 Rue Saint Hubert in Montréal besuchen kommen?

Unsere Boutique ist einzigartig im Bereich ethischer Mode. Man findet bei uns aufstrebende ethische Designer aus Kanada und allen möglichen anderen Orten auf der Welt. Doch man kann auch gerne vorbeikommen um in unserem Co-Working-Space selbst Sachen herzustellen, Dinge zu reparieren oder an unseren Workshops teilzunehmen. Hier kann man neue ökologische Techniken lernen, beispielsweise aus dem Bereich Upcycling, Siebdruck oder anderen Do-It-Yourself-Themen. Wir haben auch ein tolles Team, das mit Herzblut hinter ETHIK steht und viel Spaß dabei hat, Kunden alles über “fast and slow fashion” beizubringen.

True to the SugarTrends-motto “Shop and Explore hand-picked stores from around the world“, today we will introduce you to Lis from the Montréal boutique ETHIK. Not only does this store, as the name implies, offer a huge variety of ecologically and ethically produced garments, but also represents so much more: it is a store, an incubator, a co-working space, a place for workshops – and foremost a philosophy!

ETHIK’s focus is on the unique and special manner with which ecological, ethical and sustainable behaviour can be applied to all creative aspects. Every piece from the boutique has its own special history and does not only help the artisans to artistically fulfil themselves, but it realises, especially for female artists, a stable source of income. Lis and the whole ETHIK team support especially female entrepreneurs with heart and soul, both in Canada and globally, and have originated an outstanding and progressive store-concept!

1. Lis, tell us what is the concept behind ETHIK-boutique?

ETHIK hosts the collections of more than 40 designers ethically and socially engaged. Each of them create unique fashionable pieces. ETHIK is also an eco-design hub where members benefit from our co-working spaces. All the supplies you need to create, we provide. We also offer a range of services for designers, to help them develop their creativity, and for clients through a variety of eco-activities.

2. Where did the idea of creating an ethical fashion store come from? What did you do before?

I created FEM International which is an organisation that empowers women entrepreneurs in Canada and in developing countries. We offer various programs to help women become successful entrepreneurs. After going through such programs, a lot of the women we worked with (who worked mostly in the textile industry) did not have anywhere to sell their products. This is how ETHIK was born, as an incubator for ethical emerging designers.

3. Do you have exclusive products in the store? Where do they come from?

We work with a group of women artisans from the Guajira region in Columbia who create Mochila bags. The method they use dates back hundreds of years and it takes them up to 21 days to make one bag.  This really is the epitome of slow fashion! We also have our in-house line of shirts, dresses and skirts made from recycled men shirts called SO ETHIK.

4. Which is your and your customer’s favourite product from the store?

The Mochilas are definitely the favourite products in store! They are so beautiful but also very hard to find in Montréal. We are the only boutique that sell them and we are very proud of that.

5. Why should everybody visit your store at the 6050 rue Saint Hubert in Montreal?

Our boutique is a one stop shop of ethical Fashion. Here you will find emerging and ethical designers from Canada and abroad, you can come and use our co-working space to create or repair and you can take part in eco-workshop to learn new environmental friendly techniques such as upcycling, natural serigraphy, D.I.Y. projects and more. We have a friendly and passionate team who love to educate our customers on the issues related to fast fashion.
